Vous venez de gagner un prix au prestigieux YDA , c’est une reconnaissance et un immense clin d’œil de la profession quel a été votre sentiment en l’apprenant ?
You just won a prize at the prestigious YDA, it’s a big acknowledgement of your work from the industry, how did you feel when you first heard of your win ?
I felt incredible and I still feel incredible! It is very humbling to have my work displayed in another country alongside so many young talented individuals. Their passion shines through their work and I am incredibly excited to have been a part of this experience.
C’était une sensation incroyable, qui me poursuit encore. C’est incroyable de voir mon travail projeté dans d’autres pays, accompagné de jeunes réalisateurs aussi talentueux. Leur passion brille au travers de leur travail et je suis encore terriblement excité d’avoir pris part à cette aventure.

Which movie are you the most proud of ?
Fade. The process of bringing this film to the screen, though the journey had its fair amount of struggles along the way, has been one of the most genuinely rewarding experiences I have ever had. I feel like a huge weight was lifted off of my shoulders when I finally found a way to tell my story. Now, I’m ready for the next adventure.
Fade. Le chemin qu’il m’a fallu parcourir pour porter ce film à l’écran. Le voyage a été semé d’embûches et le résultat a, du coup, été l’une des plus sincèrement gratifiante expérience de ma vie. J’ai ressenti un énorme poids en moins que j’ai enfin trouvé un moyen de raconter mon histoire. Maintenant, je suis prêt pour la prochaine aventure.

And which one are you the least proud of ?
I enjoy all of my work because each film, each experiment, is a way to express a new emotion in a different way. It’s practice that helps us become better storytellers and that is what I’m always working towards, even if my ideas don’t quite work out the way I planned. You learn a lot from making mistakes and the great thing about that is; you can always try again.
J’aime chacun de mes projet. Parce que chaque film, chaque expérience, est une façon d’exprimer une nouvelle émotion, d’une nouvelle façon. C’est la pratique qui nous rend de meilleur conteur, c’est pour ça que je regarde toujours de l’avant, même quand mes idées ne fonctionnent pas comme je l’avais imaginé. On apprend énormément de ses erreurs et ce qui est formidable, c’est qu’on peut toujours réessayer.
Comment définirais tu ton style ?
How would you describe your ‘style » ?
love to build things. I will build anything as long as I can find the materials, and that’s the fun part. Finding new purpose for discarded items is one of the most fun things I can think of because there is no limit to what you can do. The texture and color of these objects attract my eye, and I want to share that variety with others. That’s why I find stop motion so appealing because it is an entirely hands-on project, and I love every second of it.
J’adore construire des choses. Je le ferai aussi longtemps que je trouverai le matériel parce que c’est justement la partie la plus fun. Offrir un nouveau destin à des objets abandonnés est la plus chose la plus amusante que je puisse imaginer parce que c’est sans limite. C’est les couleurs et les textures de ces objets qui attirent mon œil et me donnent envie de les partager. C’est pour ça que je trouve que le top motion est aussi adapté. C’est une expérience de terrain et j »en apprécie chaque seconde.
Dans toutes les catégories, quel est le film qui représente le plus ta génération ?
Among all categories which film do you think is the most representative of your generation ?
I’m going to have to say Scott Pilgrim v.s. The World. It’s not something you would expect to hear, but that is also part of my point. This era is loud and fast and bright. Life is firmly meshed with the advent of new technology and this film delivers nothing but digital eye candy. The protagonist is confused and hurt and lost and finds his own path through his goofy sense of humor. Just look at Instagram or Vine. You can make half the world laugh in six seconds. I think it’s safe to say we are all a little silly.
Je dois dire Scott Pilgrim. Je sais que vous ne vous attendiez sûrement pas à cette réponse, mais justement. Notre époque est bruyante et rapide et lumineuse. La vie est intimement liée avec l’avancée des technologies et ce film nous propose juste une gourmandise digitale. Le personnage est torturé et perdu et trouve son chemin grâce à son sens de l’humour maladroit. Regardez Instagram ou Vine. Vous pouvez faire rire la moitié de la planète en six secondes. Je pense qu’on peut dire qu’on est tous un peu idiot.

DEAD… by Joe Bichard on Vimeo. The way the whole piece is put together is a little unsettling and very strange, but I like it all the more because of that. I absolutely love the primary color palette. It brings such a brightness that contrasts the character’s grim monologue. It gives me hope for future projects I want to attempt.

Ca apporte une telle lumière qui contraste avec les monologues spleeniques du personnage. Ca me donne de l’espoir pour mes futurs projets.

What’s the most promonitory movie you’ve ever seen ?
I have never been through such a range of emotions than during my viewing of the powerful documentary, Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father. To this day, I have only seen the film once, but no film has stuck with me more after a single viewing than this one. I highly recommend that more people take the time to experience it for themselves.
Je n’ai jamais traversé un tel panel d’émotions qu’en regardant le puissant documentaire Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father. Je n’ai vu le film qu’une fois pour le moment, mais aucun film m’a autant chamboulé après une seule vision. Je recommande cette expérience à tout lemonde.

Growing up, nothing made me more excited than the sight of a sunrise through the trees around my house. When the sun started peeking through the blinds in my window, my mind would start racing because I knew that in no time at all, I’d be done with breakfast and out the door. In that early morning light exists a world where anything is possible .
En grandissant, rien ne m’excite plus que de voir le soleil se lever à travers les arbres autour de ma maison. Quand le soleil commence à percer à travers les volets de ma fenêtre, mon cerveau commence à marcher à toute vitesse parce que je sais qu’en un rien de temps je serai dehors. C’est le moment où tout est possible.
Il y a aujourd’hui plus de jeunes réalisateurs que de jeunes écrivains. Il y a de plus en plus de chaînes Vimeo que de manuscrits publiés. Est-ce que les images sont en train de définitivement remplacer les mots ?
Nowadays there are more young directors than young writers, there are more vimeo channels than published manuscripts, do you think images are now totally replacing words ?
As the world progresses, so does our means of expression. The ability to capture an image has been a part of almost every widely sold consumer product over the last decade. People take photographs by the dozen, making the act feel like some kind of contest. Will they even remember most of those pictures? The pictures that do stand out have a story behind them; a moment they captured. Something they were saying to one another or the music that played in the background. Those images help recall those conversations and thoughts by linking together in our minds. It’s hard to separate the two from one another, for neither is solely dominant.
Le monde progresse et avec lui, nos moyens d’expression. La capapcité ) capturer une image a été la base de toute production qui a bien fonctionné cette dernière décennie. Les gens prennent des douzaines de photos, comme s’il s’agissait d’une compétition. Se rappelleront-ils seulement de leurs photos ? Les photos qui restent sont celles avec une histoire derrière elle. Des photos qui racontent quelque chose. Ce sont des photos qui ramènent des souvenirs. C’est impossible de séparer image et mot.
Les vieux disent que c’était mieux avant, tu es de ceux qui pensent que ce sera mieux après?

You cannot forget yesterday. The knowledge you gather from what has already happened will help guide your own decisions and those of others in the future. That is how it will be better. We as individuals have to condition ourselves to try, no matter what action or train of thought that may be. It’s pretty exciting not knowing what will happen next. Tomorrow is another sunrise, so get ready to play.
On ne peut pas oublier hier. Hier nous guide pour nos décision et pour tracer le chemin de demain. C’est le seul moyen de s’améliorer. Nous devons tous essayer quelque soit les difficultés qui vont avec. C’est très excitant de ne pas savoir de quoi demain sera fait. Demain est un nouveau lever de soleil, donc soyez prêt à jouer.
